2016 Bentley Continental GT
With the introduction of the second generation GT came the addition of a second engine option. While the W12 continued on, a modern, small displacement turbocharged V8 was introduced. While not as powerful as the W12, the V8 became my choice of engine in the Continental, for its throatier sounds and, more importantly, that there was less mass over the front axle, making the V8 Continental every so slightly more responsive.Through the 2015 model year, the Continental has been so successful for Bentley that they’ve delivered over 52,000 of them in 11 years and it remains Bentley’s most popular model each year. For 2016, the visual changes are obvious. The sharper, more sporting lower front fascia looks like it was originally designed for the racing Continental GT3 and softened for the road car. Front fenders feature a sharper crease and now include the flying B, similar in look to the Flying Spur and Mulsanne models. At the rear, the lip integrated into the boot-lid is more pronounced and intentionally sporting and a revised lower rear diffuser is fitted to V8 S and W12 Speed models.
Wheel styling is similarly modernized with three new designs, including Bentley’s first direction design, a twenty-one-inch wheel unique to the V8 S and W12 Speed.
The interior of the 2016 Continental remains largely unchanged, save for minor details, but is still one of the most luxurious cabins you will find. With big, broad chairs, authentic materials, excellent sight-lines and ergonomics, the cockpit is as effective as it is opulent.
Buyers have their choice of two new patterns of leather in a range of colors for both hides and stitching. There is also a new sport steering wheel with a slightly different design and the steering column’s shift levers are knurled for improved tactility. The paddles are a long reach from the wheel, keeping them safely out of the way for day-to-day driving, the knurling is a welcome touch, pun fully intended, for finger tip confirmation that you have reached the lever.
